Postre de Durazno (Mexican Peach Dessert)

Postre de durazno is a creamy fruit dessert made with peaches in syrup, peach gelatin, and chopped nuts, all folded into a sweet, milky sauce. It’s rich, refreshing, and full of soft, chewy, and crunchy textures.

You’ll usually see it served in Mexican homes in big glass bowls at birthdays, holidays, or Sunday family gatherings, alongside other chilled desserts like gelatina de mosaico.

What makes it so popular is how easy it is to adapt. Every family has their own version, and this is how I like to make it at home.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • canned peaches in syrup
  • peach gelatin
  • tapioca pearls
  • nuts, raisins, and shredded coconut
  • Mexican crema
  • evaporated milk
  • condensed milk
  • peach syrup (from the can)
  • vanilla extract

Making Postre de Durazno

First, prepare the gelatin and, if using, the tapioca pearls according to the package directions the day before, so they have time to set properly. Once it’s fully chilled, cut the gelatin into small cubes.

In a large bowl, mix the Mexican crema, condensed milk, evaporated milk, vanilla, and a bit of the peach syrup from the can.

Mixing all the ingredients to make the creamy sauce in a bowl.

Then add the diced peaches, the gelatin cubes, and the cooked tapioca pearls.

Fold in the shredded coconut, raisins, and chopped nuts.

Adding the canned diced peaches, gelatin, tapioca, raisins, and nuts to the creamy sauce.

Gently mix everything until well combined. Give it a taste here and adjust the sweetness to your liking.

Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 3 hours, so all the flavors blend together and the postre de durazno turns extra creamy.

Serve it straight from the bowl for a rustic feel, or transfer it into glasses or a prettier serving dish if you prefer. Enjoy!

Fun Variations

One of the things I love about this postre de durazno is how easy it is to customize.

You can keep it simple or add your own twist depending on what you have on hand.

  • During peach season, fresh peaches are a wonderful substitute for canned ones. Just make sure they are ripe and sweet. You can use peach nectar or a little extra milk in place of the syrup.
  • No tapioca pearls? Simply leave them out. The dessert is still wonderfully creamy and delicious.
  • Swap the raisins for other dried fruits like cranberries, blueberries, chopped apricots, or even dried cherries for a different flavor.
  • Pecans, walnuts, sliced almonds, pistachios, or peanuts all work beautifully here. Use your favorite or whatever you have in the pantry.
  • Mini marshmallows are a fun addition and make the dessert feel even more nostalgic.
  • Chia seeds can be used in place of tapioca pearls for a slightly different texture.
  • For a lighter dessert, replace part of the Mexican crema with plain yogurt or use media crema instead.

Make Ahead & Keeping Leftovers

Postre de Durazno is the perfect dessert for parties, birthdays, and family gatherings because you can make it entirely in advance.

In fact, I think it tastes even better after a few hours in the fridge, when all the flavors have had time to blend and the creamy base becomes almost custard-like.

You can prepare it the night before and keep it covered in the refrigerator until you’re ready to serve.

If I am serving a crowd, I like to leave it in a large glass bowl and let everyone help themselves.

Leftovers keep well in the fridge for up to 3 days. Just give the dessert a gentle stir before serving again, since some of the liquid may settle as it rests.

I don’t recommend freezing it. The creamy base, gelatin, and tapioca pearls won’t have the same texture after thawing.

Chilling time 3 hours
total 3 hours 40 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 can peaches in syrup (15 oz / 425 g)
  • 1 package peach gelatin (3 oz / 85 g)
  • 1 cup cooked tapioca pearls (optional)
  • ½ cup shredded coconut
  • ½ cup raisins
  • ½ cup pecan or walnuts (chopped)

For the creamy base

  • 2 cups Mexican crema (or Greek yogurt)
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk (14oz)
  • ½ can evaporated milk
  • peach syrup from the cans (to taste)
  • 1 ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Prepare the peach gelatin according to the package directions, using ¼ less water than called for (see notes). Refrigerate until firm, then cut into small cubes.
  • If using tapioca pearls, cook them according to the package directions and let them cool completely.
  • In a large bowl, stir together the Mexican crema, condensed milk, evaporated milk, vanilla, and a little peach syrup. Add more syrup to taste if you like it sweeter or thinner.
  • Add the peaches cut into bite-sized pieces, the gelatin cubes, and the cooked tapioca pearls.
  • Add the shredded coconut, raisins, and chopped nuts. Gently stir everything together until well combined.
  • Cover and refrigerate for at least 3 hours before serving.
  • Serve cold, either in a large bowl for sharing or in individual dessert cups.

Notes

  • Prepare the gelatin with about ¼ less water than the package directions call for. This makes it a little firmer, so the cubes hold their shape better once mixed into the creamy dessert.
  • For best results, prepare the gelatin and tapioca pearls the day before so they have plenty of time to cool and set.
  • Start with a little peach syrup and add more to taste.
  • Fresh peaches are a wonderful substitute when they’re in season.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Give the dessert a gentle stir before serving again.
