Mexican sweet breads, or pan dulce, are a wide variety of pastries, rolls, and buns traditionally enjoyed in Mexico for breakfast or merienda. They can be soft and fluffy, flaky and crisp, or filled with sweet cream, jam, or chocolate.
When I was little, stopping by the panaderÃa (bakery) was a small but happy ritual. My siblings and I would pick our favorite pan dulce with silver tongs, and somehow, they always tasted better when shared at home with a warm cup of chocolate or cafe de olla.

Those conchas pan dulce are soft, sweet, and with a delicious streusel topping. Just like the ones from a Mexican bakery. Enjoy with hot chocolate, milk, or coffee.
A rustic sweet bread flavored with anise seeds. They’re lightly sweet, often sprinkled with sesame seeds, and is one of the oldest and most traditional breads in Mexico.
Two soft cakes joined with jam and rolled in sugar, like a little kiss in dessert form! The besos can be filled with apricot or strawberry jam and then covered with sugar.
A cookie-like pan dulce made in various shapes covered with sugar. The name comes from the word “polvo” (dust) because the texture is so crumbly that reminds of dust.
A thick cookie covered with sprinkles, its shape can vary, from round to square or even rhomboid. Even being a cookie, this type of “bread” is always present at any Mexican bakery.
These seasonal Mexican pastries are part of our celebrations and family traditions, baked with meaning and shared with love (and a cup of hot chocolate!).
