Agua de Sandía (watermelon agua fresca)

This homemade Agua de Sandía is made with ripe watermelon, water, lime, and just a touch of sweetness. It is light, delicious, and ready in only 10 minutes. Serve it over ice for the ultimate summer drink.

In Mexico, aguas frescas are part of everyday life. We make them with seasonal fruit, serve them at family meals, and rely on them to cool off during the hottest months of the year.

They’re inexpensive, easy to make, and always disappear fast.

This Agua de Sandía is one of my favorites because it’s so simple. A sweet watermelon does most of the work, so you only need a few ingredients to make a pitcher that’s light, refreshing, and perfect with everything from tacos to ceviche.

You’ll Need

You only need a handful of simple ingredients to make this homemade Agua de Sandía recipe. Since watermelon is the star, pick one that’s ripe and naturally sweet for the best flavor.

  • Ripe watermelon
  • Brown sugar, agave, or your preferred sweetener
  • Water
  • Fresh lime juice (optional but highly recommended)

How To Make Agua de Sandía

Start by cutting your watermelon into chunks and removing the rind.

If there are seeds, I usually remove them too, although you can always strain the drink later.

Add the watermelon to a blender with part of the water and blend until completely smooth.

I like to let it run a little longer than necessary because it makes the drink silky.

Pour the mixture into a large pitcher. If your watermelon had seeds or you prefer a smoother texture, strain it through a fine-mesh sieve before continuing.

Stir in the lime juice and sweetener until everything dissolves. Then add the remaining water and give it a taste.

If the watermelon was especially sweet, you may not need much sugar at all.

Chill the fresh watermelon drink in the refrigerator or serve it immediately over plenty of ice.

I sometimes garnish the glasses with a small watermelon wedge or a slice of lime if I’m serving guests.

Tips and Notes

  • The sweeter the watermelon, the less sugar you’ll need.
  • Blend long enough to fully break down the fruit for the best texture.
  • If making it ahead, refrigerate the pitcher and add ice only when serving so it doesn’t get watered down.
  • Fresh lime juice brightens the flavor without making it taste sour.
  • Frozen watermelon works well too and chills the drink even faster.
  • Taste before adding extra sweetener, you might be surprised by how naturally sweet ripe watermelon is.

What to Serve With

This Mexican summer drink goes with almost anything, but I especially love it alongside tacos, grilled carne asada, burgers, ceviche, or spicy snacks with chile and lime.

It’s also wonderful with light lunches or as a cooling drink during backyard cookouts.

Common Questions About Watermelon Agua Fresca

Do I need to strain agua de sandía?

Not unless you want to! I usually strain it because I like it extra smooth, but if you’re using a seedless watermelon, you can skip that step and enjoy a little more texture.

Can I make it without sugar?

Yes! If your watermelon is nice and sweet, you may not need any at all. I always blend it first, give it a taste, and only add sweetener if it needs a little boost.

Why is my watermelon agua fresca foamy?

That’s completely normal. Blending watermelon traps a bit of air, creating foam on top. I usually let it sit for a few minutes before serving, and most of it settles on its own.

Can I use frozen watermelon?

Absolutely. It’s a great way to make homemade agua de sandía any time of year, and it helps keep the drink nice and cold. You may just need a splash of extra water to get everything blending smoothly.

How long does agua de sandía last?

It keeps well in the fridge for up to 3 days. Just give it a quick stir before serving, since the fruit naturally separates as it sits.

How do I pick the best watermelon for this recipe?

I always look for one that feels heavy for its size, has a deep green rind, and that creamy yellow field spot underneath. If you want a more detailed guide, this one from Serious Eats on how to choose a ripe watermelon is really helpful.
