Ingredients

  • Guayabas: Known in English as guava fruit, make sure you choose the most ripened as those will be more flavorful and sweet.
  • Sugar: Use granulated sugar or substitute with your favorite sweetener.
  • Water: I recommend using room temperature water so the sugar will dissolve easily when mixed.

How to Make Agua de Guayaba

Wash thoroughly each guava fruit under cold water. Cut the end where the flower was attached and then cut each fruit in half.

Place guayabas in a blender, then add two cups of water and one cup of sugar.

Top tip: Use all the fruit, don’t peel or remove the seeds because you’ll get rid of the seeds in the next step anyway.

Set to high speed and blend until the guavas are perfectly pureed. It can take from 2 to 4 minutes depending on your blending power.

Next, remove the seeds by using a strainer and pouring the guava mixture into a large pitcher.

Recipe Notes and Tips

  • Choose guavas that are nicely ripe because they are best and taste sweetest when they are very soft, this will allow you to use less sugar!
  • Adding ice directly to the glasses instead of the pitcher when making agua de guayaba helps maintain the drink’s flavor and prevents dilution.
  • Guavas combine perfectly with other tropical fruits, so you can blend in some mango, papaya, or pineapple, and make some cool combinations!
  • Garnish the glasses with a slice of guayaba fruit, or dice it and add it to the pitcher for a fun chewy texture.
  • You can also use frozen guavas to make this drink. Don’t need to thaw them, just blend them with water as the recipe calls.

Pairing Suggestions

As with other types of agua fresca, agua de guayaba can be enjoyed just to quench your thirst any time of the day, but it’s also the perfect pairing for many Mexican foods. Here are my favorites:

Store

Agua de guayaba stores nicely in the fridge for up to 3 days. If you want to store it in the freeze, I recommend making the guava mixture and transferring it to small containers or into ice trays, then freezing it for up to 3 months.

Next time you’d like to enjoy this guava drink, thaw the mixture and proceed with the recipe as suggested.
