Ingredients
▢
2
cups
walnuts
(or pecans, or hazelnuts)
▢
14
oz
can condensed milk
(or your favorite sweetener)
▢
12
oz
can evaporated milk
(or whole milk)
▢
8
cups
water
▢
1
teaspoon
hazelnut extract
(optional, you can substitute with vanilla extract)
▢
½
teaspoon
ground cinnamon
Instructions
Heat a comal or griddle over medium-low heat. Add the walnuts and toast for 4-5 minutes stirring constantly until they start to release their aroma.
Remove ½ cup of nuts and set aside. Then add the whole nuts to a bowl and cover them with boiling water. Soak for 20–30 minutes.
Drain the nuts and place them in a blender along with 2 cups of water (from the ingredients listed) and ground cinnamon.
Blend until nicely smooth then transfer to a large pitcher.
Add to the pitcher the evaporated milk, condensed milk, hazelnut extract, and the remaining 6 cups of water. Mix to combine.
Mix in the half cup of chopped nuts you set aside before and then adjust sweetness with sugar if needed.
Serve in glasses with ice and enjoy.
Notes
For a smoother flavor, you can blanch the walnuts after toasting to remove the skins, especially if you find them too bitter.
Serve agua de nuez over ice in glasses, not in the pitcher, to keep the drink from diluting as the ice melts.
Adjust the sweetness by adding more sugar or using your favorite sweetener, like honey or maple syrup.
If you prefer a dairy-free version, swap the evaporated and condensed milk for almond milk, oat milk, or coconut milk.
