Agua de sandia refers to a popular Mexican drink recipe made of ripe watermelon, water, and sugar.

The fruit is blended with a bit of water and then dilute in more water and sweetened to deliver a refreshing beverage called agua fresca de sandía.

We can say that agua de sandia is a mix between watermelon juice and a smoothie, but it tastes a lot better! Is the perfect summertime drink for adults and kids.

About Mexican Aguas Frescas

Aguas frescas (plural) are Mexican non-alcoholic beverages usually made with fruit. In Mexico, you can find them in the streets, markets, and ice cream parlors. They’re super refreshing and perfect to cool down during hot days.

There are many recipes for aguas frescas and for almost every fruit and citrus available, there is the agua fresca version: Think of mango, kiwi, pineapple, lime, tamarind, oranges, strawberries.

But also vegetables like cucumber agua fresca or even grains to make horchata agua fresca. And of course, this watermelon agua fresca (agua de sandía).

How To Make Agua de Sandia

  • Cut the watermelon into chunks discarding the skin and seeds (read faq’s below).
  • Add watermelon to a blender, pour two cups of water, and blend until smooth.
  • Strain watermelon mixture into a large pitcher.
  • Add lime juice and remaining water.
  • Add sugar to taste mixing thoroughly to dissolve the sugar before adding more.
  • Place the pitcher in the fridge for at least one hour or…
  • Serve immediately in glasses over crushed ice.

Tips & tricks

  • When you adding the sugar make sure the water is at room temperature so it can dissolve easy and fast. If you use cold water, dissolving sugar can be a hard task and you don’t want sugar grains in your fresca, not especially if you enjoying with your meal.
  • Ad as much water as is need to make the fresca actually a light drink and not a slushie or a smoothie drink.
  • I prefer my frescas to be super smooth and don’t have fruit bites so I strain the blend, always. If you prefer a more fruity texture, go ahead and add the water straight from the blender.
  • If you want make this watermelon fresca ahead of time, do not add ice to the pitcher or you will end with a blend drink after the ice has melted. Place the pitcher in the fridge instead and only add ice right before serving.
  • Don’t sure about adding sugar? No worries, this agua de sandía is delicious as it is. Omit the sugar and you still will have a refreshing and delicious drink. Or just replace refined sugar with any sweetener you prefer.
  • You can garnish your drink with diced watermelon, lime slices, or fresh mint leaves.


Can I make it sugar-free?

Absolutely. The drink will be less sweet but still, have a fruity delicious taste. Besides, ripe watermelons can have a strong sugary taste and you won’t miss the sugar at all.

Can you tell if a watermelon is ripe by smell?

Not really. Unlike cantaloupes, watermelons don’t have an open end where the vine was attached so if you sniff a watermelon I doubt you’ll be able to feel any smell.

Do I have to strain the watermelon mixture?

Not really. You can add it as it is and get the full benefit from the fruit’s fiber too.

Do I need to remove the watermelon seeds?

Not at all! Blend them all together with the pulp, then just strain the mixture into the pitcher.

Can I spike this recipe?

Yes of course, for a grown-up drink, feel free to add a splash of your fav booze to the mix.

Can I make it ahead?

Yes. You can make this agua fresca de sandia up to 3 days ahead and store it in the fridge well covered to prevent it from absorbing other smells.

Can I freeze watermelon chunks?

Yes! and is actually a good idea because this way you can make this recipe whenever you crave it. To do so, place the chunks in a flat plate and freeze until firm, transfer the chunks to a bag and freeze for up to 4 months.
