Grapefruit vodka (greyhound cocktail)
This grapefruit vodka cocktail (greyhound) is made in just a couple of minutes. Perfect to serve at happy hours or as aperitif at summer dinners. The beauty of this cocktail is in its simplicity, try it and let me know what do you think!
What is greyhound drink?
A greyhound drink is made with grapefruit juice and vodka or gin. The first mention of this cocktail has place in the Savoy Cocktail Book from the author Harry Craddock. He said that his mix was a variation of a Grapefruit cocktail which makes us think that those type of cocktail were already popular back then.
But it wasn’t until 1945 that a magazine published a cocktail with such ingredientes and call it greyhound. The recipe become popular and it also have is own variation named salty dog where salt is added to the mix.
My grapefruit vodka drink
I wasn’t sure to post the “recipe” for this drink because after all, who needs a recipe to combine vodka/gin and any fruit juice you can think of? Nobody I believe, but I still wanted to share them and perhaps serve as inspiration in case you have guests and want something easy and fast to serve as aperitif.
To be completely honest, I didn’t know about this recipe until I made it. Really. And I made it because I was doing a grapefruit feature for my photo stock. And let me tell you: it was a complete success at home. The tart and bitter flavor of grapefruit juice combines perfectly with the vodka and it was so easy to make and so pretty to see that I couldn’t help but to come here and share the recipe with you.
I also added a pinch of salt that in my opinion was perfect, but turned out doing so the drink is called differently. So, greyhound or salty dog, whatever version you wanna do, you’ll enjoy it for sure.
How to make the drink
- Fill cocktail glass with ice cubes. Pour in 40ml of vodka or gin.
